Merino has a few remarkable properties that make it great for sports use. For one resists odor better than just about any other fiber.

More importantly it is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs water vapor, pulling humidity away from the body to create a dry microclimate as you begin to sweat. Finally it thermobuffers, insulating incredibly well when it's cool but because it absorbs moisture it doesn't overheat nearly as quickly as most insulators. It has one weakness in active use though, while it absorbs tons of moisture while staying dry to the touch, all that absorption can get heavy. Polyester stays dry in a very different manner, it barely absorbs any moisture at all, but wicks moisture quickly across its surface, speeding up evaporation. The combination of the two goes straight to the sweet spot, not too heavy but nicely odor resistant while staying soft and dry under pressure.
